Fukushima Heating Up–in All the Wrong Ways

Unit 2 Up To 275.9 Degrees, Excessive Radiation Being Discharged From Nuclear Plant
TEPCO declared the temperature sensor “likely broken” at unit 2 as we mentioned yesterday. Nuclear plant employees dismissed that claim by TEPCO and they think the gauge is still functioning properly. Today the temps jumped up to 275.9 up from temperatures in the 80′s and then 90 degree range over the weekend. Adding to the factors

Fukushima Update–Nothing to See Here Folks, Just Move Along
by Matthew Payne on December 20, 2011
So, the big Fukushima Daiichi news is that TEPCo has announced a “cold shutdown“! Well, sort of. Kinda. Really, not at all.
There are very real and scientific standards for telling whether or not you have a “cold shutdown” of melted down reactor cores. To explain as succinctly as possible, “a cold shutdown” is the state in which the nuclear pile is no longer producing a chain reaction …

Fukushima Update–It Just Got Worse
by Matthew Payne on December 5, 2011
Regular readers of this blog will recall your humble correspondent expressing concern about the danger of further radioactive contamination of the environment stemming from the very large amounts of radioactive water being cycled through the damaged cores. Well, I’m a bit more than concerned now. A spill of radioactive water from a purification apparatus at Fukushima Daiichi–to the tune of about 45 tons–has just been added to the disaster’s marine …

Fukushima Update–Reactor Nearly Goes “China Syndrome”
by Matthew Payne on December 4, 2011
Well, that little difficulty with splitting atoms in Japan in a tsunami zone that was concern-trolled as “not such a big deal” back in the spring is certainly a big deal in the fall. A report released by TEPCo (c/o The Guardian) indicates that the melted fuel in Reactor One has completely penetrated through the inner pressure vessel and the outer containment vessel and may be boring through the concrete …

Fukushima Update–The Marine Story
by Matthew Payne on December 1, 2011
The very informative Al-Jezeera clip below indicates just how much of a FUBAR the whole Fukushima situation is, lo these many months on. Experts worried as early as last spring, pumping water through a compromised cooling system could lead to serious marine radiation contamination–and so it has come to pass. The cesium contamination reported in the clip is eye-popping, especially given the wide dispersal area offshore from Fukushima. By comparison, …

Fukushima Update–The Fallout Continues
by Matthew Payne on November 29, 2011
The Fukushima triple meltdown (hey, maybe coming to a GE reactor near you some day!) is off the front pages everywhere except Japan but the stricken nuclear plant is certainly the gift that keeps on giving to Japanese headline writers. The latest on the plant can be broken down into “um, not good” and “what the heck is going on?” In the first category of “um, not good” we have the …

Elizabeth Warren ~ The Woman Who Knew Too Much
At the end of his remarks, Obama turned to Warren and kissed her on the cheek. She smiled gamely, though if there are kisses a woman can do without, this was one of them. A Judas kiss, some would say.
