Stop saying “Africa”

This morning I came across a typical, lazy, offhanded reference to “Africa” (that is, the second largest continent and home of 54 individual countries) as total basketcase, as a place of misery, backwardness and genocide.

In fact, the writer in question essentially used “Africa” as a metaphor for genocide, without citing any country, era, political faction, or other relevant data. Pure laziness and, I suspect, total political, cultural, social and …
