Legendary Maritime folksinger and feminist Rita MacNeil has died, at the age of 68
by Michelle Lovegrove Thomson on April 17, 2013
The Cape Breton singer died on Tuesday as a result of complications from surgery. She recorded 24 albums over her career, and her song “Working Man” will live on as an evocative and emotional tale of mining-culture in the mid-Twentieth century. I would describe her sound as Celtic showtunes, or 80s adult contemporary imbued with local flair. MacNeil’s Christmas TV specials were a delight. At the core of each song—the …

Celebrating the Morgentaler decision: 25 years since Supreme Court struck down abortion law
by Michelle Lovegrove Thomson on January 28, 2013
On Monday, January 28, 1988 the Supreme Court of Canada ruled in R. v. Morgentaler that the federal government’s criminal law governing abortions was unconstitutional. It ruled that women should have control of their bodies. It was, and remains, a landmark victory for Canadian women.
The core of the case, which is often obscured by the hyperbole and essentialisms of moral and religious debates in pop culture, relates …

Anti-Abortion laws & involuntary childbirth: the questions we should be asking
by Michelle Lovegrove Thomson on October 29, 2012
If you’re serious about reducing abortion, the most important issue is not which abortions to ban. The most important issue is how will you support women to have the babies they want.
CNN contributor David Frum has penned an exceptionally well-argued and accessible article that makes clear two of the leading reasons women seek abortions: poverty and “maternal distress.” (These are not the only reasons, but I’ll take what I …

Pussy Riot And Dostoevskian Protest
by Nick Glossop on October 28, 2012
What is Pussy Riot’s ‘Idea’?
Sitting recently in a café in the company of various activists and artists after a cultural event in Moscow, a young and impassioned activist, who had impressed the oppositional milieu with her speeches in recent protest rallies, introduced her friend to me as a ‘Voina group activist and author of Pussy Riot projects’. The unknown author just nodded and continued tapping his iPad. I wondered

Walking in the City, as a Woman
by Andrew Loewen on October 26, 2012
I’ve always done a lot of walking. And I’ve lived in several cities. I can’t recall the last time I saw a guy “cat call” a woman, though if you’re attuned to it the oggling is relentless. Apparently in NYC verbal harassment is still the order of the day. W Kamau Bell’s street segments for his TV show Totally Biased are great and this one is no exception.

by Nick Glossop on October 10, 2012
A little over a week after she fired her legal team for unspecified differences in point of view, Yekaterina Samutsevich has been freed on appeal, her sentence suspended.
The Moscow City Court ruled that Yekaterina Samutsevich’s sentence should be suspended because she was thrown out of the cathedral by guards before she could remove her guitar from its case and take part in the performance.

by Michelle Lovegrove Thomson on October 5, 2012
Worth sharing: The Stranger has compiled a studiously satirical series of interviews with Seattle-based “Men who Rock” in the tradition of Rolling Stone’s annual feature (I’m linking to a profile on Rye Rye here, because DANCE).
Columnists interview six leading men from indie and hip hop groups, asking probing questions such as, “What’s the hardest thing about being a man who rocks?”, “What is your stage preparation …

No Images, No Video, Just Some Straight Talk On The Latest Film-Riot Thing
by Lorelei Loveridge on September 18, 2012
Quite the story (well written by a Muslim female journalist, as part of a site/series to analyse media) to find that an entire cast and crew of a film were duped into believing they were making a general spoof set in Arabia, not of Islam or the Prophet Mohammed, but of generic characters…only to find that the creep who financed and produced the film had truly vile intentions to stir up …
