New Dinosaur Jr. Video (apparently music videos still get made?)

Throughout junior high (around 1990-93 if memory serves) my friend and I would walk to my family’s empty Edmonton house during lunch hour and watch Much Music (Canada’s answer to MTV) as we ate. These were the years of epic narrative videos (think G n R’s “November Rain” and “Don’t Cry”). While our own tastes tended toward original punk and the newly designated “alternative” rock, we watched those idiot videos. I’m not going to rehearse the history and importance of Dinosaur Jr (because fuck that) but here’s the reformed band’s latest video which features alt-comedy personality Tim Heidecker, and offers a down-scaled homage to the epic narrative music videos of yore. Could be a lot better and more subversive frankly. But if you keep with it the hot skater playboy does get his comeuppance, though the politics of representing wage-labor here aren’t great. If you have a means of cranking the sound, that age-old interplay between over-driven guitar rock and morose nasalism still delivers. And the video was just posted today, so consider this a scoop. Yeah, whatever.

Oh, and the scrubbed out face of the skater hottie (aligned w/ the band itself in said face-scrubbing) is a nice touch. Do we have thoughts about it?

I don’t like the goofy appeal to patriarchy in the video. Fuck dads.
