The Dick Flash Imperative

A high volume of incidents of sexual violence, assault, harrassment, and “rape humour” have recently been making headlines.

This month in Toronto there were at least four different arrests made relating to sexual assaults on the street, at York University, and in women’s homes. As we all know, these four arrests represent only a tiny fraction of the violent activity being enacted on our streets and in our homes. Responding with anger is the obvious option, so it’s wonderful to stumble upon someone who has found a genuinely humourous and insightful approach to understanding why so many men like to wag their shortcomings at womenfolk.

Check out comedian Sasheer Zamata’s fantastic send-up of being flashed by a man while walking home one evening. She considers the whole situation from the perspective of the man–why haven’t I done that?–and finally it all makes sense!

If you have a moment, check out some fo the other short videos created by filmmaker/editor Chioke Nassor.
