O Canada (We’re Mining Tar for Steve)

So, it’s Nation-State Day in the Great White and Tar Black petro-state of Canada, when amidst the barbecuing and fireworks you may, depending on your “networks,” see or overhear a lonely voice or scribbler off in the margins, the archetypical Debbie Downer leftist or Marie Missingbuffalo Residential School survivor, raining unhappy reality on the happy nationalism parade. Well, I like my downers in the key of uppers on days like today. So I give you Victoria BC’s Nomeansno with their 1991 cover of the Subhumans’ “Oh Canaduh.” With so much present day political sentiment focused on the execrable Mr. Harper, it may come as a surprise to some to hear discontent with the state of Canada that precedes Prime Minister Steve and his merry band of Calgary School tar-sands slingers by nearly 20 years.
