Malcolm McLaren ~ Magnificent Failure Over Benign Success

For old Punks of my vintage it’s generally taken as axiomatic that Malcolm McLaren is an ass-hat, more than that, he is the Judas Iscariot of ass-hats (a title that would likely please him). His oft repeated claim to have invented the Sex Pistols and invented Punk Rock largely for his own idle amusement rankles, but what always irked me much more was his insistence that Punk never was any of the things that I so ardently wanted it to be; in the words of a Catch 22 character, ‘it never was what it was,’ it was, rather a con, always a con, HIS con. He still has the power to irritate, nevertheless he also has a great deal to say that is of interest in this talk from 2009 which combines reminiscences with observations on art and culture and the history of the British arts college.
